SYLLABUS
Overall Goal: To equip students with a comprehensive understanding of graphic design techniques and prepare them for professional careers in the industry.
This course will be divided into three main phases:
Phase 1: CorelDraw Fundamentals (Month 1)
Module 1: Introduction to CorelDraw
- Introduction to vector graphics and their advantages over raster graphics
- Exploring the CorelDraw interface: Workspace layout, menus, toolbars, and palettes
- File management: Creating, opening, saving, and closing files
- Customizing the workspace for your preferences
Module 2: Working with Objects
- Understanding different object types: Basic shapes, curves, text, and images
- Creating and manipulating objects using various drawing tools
- Transforming objects: Scaling, rotating, skewing, and mirroring
- Aligning and arranging objects for precise layouts
Module 3: Working with Text and Color
- Text formatting: Fonts, styles, paragraph settings, and text effects
- Working with color palettes: Creating and customizing color schemes
- Applying fills and outlines to objects
- Understanding color theory for effective design
Module 4: Basic Design Principles
- Design principles: Composition, balance, hierarchy, contrast, and repetition
- Creating layouts for different project types (e.g., brochures, flyers, logos)
- Introduction to typography and its role in design
Module 5: Practical Projects 1
- Creating a simple logo
- Designing a business card
- Designing a flyer for an event
Phase 2: Intermediate CorelDraw Skills (Month 2)
Module 6: Advanced Object Manipulation
- Combining and splitting objects
- Boolean operations: Union, intersection, difference, and exclusion
- Welding, trimming, and insetting objects
- Creating complex shapes using pathfinder tools
Module 7: Working with Layers
- Understanding the importance of layers in organizing your artwork
- Creating, editing, and manipulating layers
- Locking and hiding layers for efficient workflow
- Using layer effects for advanced design elements
Module 8: Effects and Filters
- Applying various effects to objects: Blurs, shadows, bevels, and distortions
- Using artistic filters to create unique visual styles
- Mastering transparency settings for realistic compositions
Module 9: Working with Images
- Importing and exporting images in different formats
- Image editing tools: Cropping, resizing, adjusting color and contrast
- Tracing bitmap images to create vector graphics
- Embedding and linking images in your CorelDraw projects
Module 10: Practical Projects 2
- Designing a poster for a product or service
- Creating a brochure with multiple pages
- Designing a simple infographic
Phase 2: Advanced Techniques and Project Focus (Month 3)
Module 11: Text Effects and Artistic Text
- Advanced text formatting options: Drop caps, bullets and numbering, text on a path
- Creating artistic text for logos and decorative elements
- Envelopes and distortions for creative text manipulation
Module 12: Prepress and Printing
- Preparing your artwork for prepress: Setting up bleed and margins
- Understanding color profiles and converting colors for printing
- Exporting your artwork in different formats (e.g., PDF, EPS)
Module 13: Advanced Design Techniques
- Introduction to symbols and their use in creating reusable elements
- Creating custom brushes and textures for unique design effects
- Creating interactive elements using CorelDraw’s web tools (optional)
Module 14: Project Showcase and Portfolio Building
- Developing a portfolio of completed projects
- Preparing your portfolio for presentations or job applications
- Exploring different platforms for showcasing your design work
Module 15: Final Project
- Developing a comprehensive design project based on your interests or career goals
- Applying the skills learned throughout the course to create a professional-quality project
